Your Business: Your Community, Your World

Social Entrepreneurs - individuals who develop a business for the dual purpose of generating profits and creating social or environmental value -  are here to stay.  By serving a triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit, these entrepreneurs can combat social problems while generating cash flow and growing a sustainable business.

Locally, Formecology, LLC is an Evansville-based  professional landscape design, installation and care firm that focuses on environmentally beneficial and regionally inspired landscapes for residential and commercial settings.  Formecology strives to provide not only attractive landscapes, but also increase health and well-being of both people and the environment.  "We all want to feel good about the work we do each day," said owner, John Gishnock IlI,  "which is why we provide this type of landscape design/build service."

Social enterprises are all about profits with a cause. No matter what your interest - saving the environment, combating homelessness, or re-building a community - you too can use your business savvy to build social capital.

Want to start a social venture, and would like some inspiration?  Check out the listings for the last three years of Businessweek's  "America's most Promising Social Entrepreneurs" 2011, 2010, 2009.

Business - Minded Youth Compete for Social Change

Making a difference isn't just for grown-ups.  The Staples Youth Social Entrepreneur Competition was created by the Staples Foundation and Ashoka to recognize and support youth around the globe who use technology and innovation to advance social change and improve their communities.

The competition is open to youths age 12-24 from across the globe.  Four finalists will win an all expenses paid trip to Tucson, AZ for networking and recognition at Techonomy, an elite conference of thought leaders, innovators, and "changemakers" from the technology sector. One grand prize winner -announced at the conference- will also take part in a Round the World Learning Tour with Youth Venture.

Know a young person making a difference, and think they should be recognized? They can still apply through September 9, 2011.
