A southside Janesville landmark for decades is no more, soon to be replaced by John Deere products and semitrailers.

Deere & Co. in August bought just less than four acres of land at the northwest corner of County G and the Highway 11 bypass, the former home of the Janesville Flea Market.

Deere & Co. paid $487,500 for the land and buildings that together were assessed at just less than $150,000, according to records filed at the Rock County Register of Deeds office.

The buildings on the property, formerly owned by the Gore Living Trust, have been demolished.

Deere plans to use the additional acreage to expand its outdoor storage space and truck parking area, said Duane Cherek, city planner.

“They're expanding their operation there, and that's a good thing,” Cherek said.

Deere plans to use a double fence to enclose the area. It also will address stormwater issues expected from the addition of more pavement, Cherek said

Part of the property, which was once two parcels, is outside the city limits and therefore requires annexation from the town of Rock.

Upon annexation, city staff has recommended the combined parcel be rezoned M1, light industrial district, to conform to the adjacent 52-acre parcel  Deere leases.

Cherek said the city council is expected to wrap up the zoning and annexation work at its Nov. 10 meeting.

He said the intersection is a southern gateway to the city.

It also will be a busy place starting next year as intersection improvements are expected to include reconstructed signals and new turn lanes.

Farther to the south, the Department of Transportation will be upgrading County G for use as an alternate route during Interstate 90/39 construction.

Work also is expected to start next year on the Avalon Road interchange with the Interstate.
